How we read it
Not a pore-clogger. Considered safe for acne-prone skin.
Is Propanediol comedogenic?
No. Propanediol isn't considered pore-clogging, and we read it as safe to use on acne-prone skin. That doesn't make it right for everyone, but congestion isn't the thing to watch for with it.
Why we read it this way
Propanediol is a clear liquid humectant and solvent, commonly made from fermented corn sugar, that holds moisture at the skin and helps other ingredients dissolve. It mixes fully with water and is not an oil. We read it as not pore-clogging.
The nuance
It is easily confused with propylene glycol, a close relative doing a similar job, and many formulas use it as the substitute. We read neither as pore-clogging. Seeing it near the top of a label reflects its solvent role, not a heavy formula.
Where it shows up
Hydrating serums, essences, toners, gel creams, sheet masks and natural deodorants, often within the first five ingredients of a water-based formula.
Related ingredients
One ingredient rarely tells the whole story. The acne ingredient checker reads everything in a product at once, and there is more on what comedogenic means. Also in the guides: What acne actually is.
